Desert Bath
A Spa in Wadi Rum, Jordan

This project explores how extremes can be juxtaposed to create site specific architecture. In the desert valley of Wadi Rum, Jordan this spa lies in the shadow of the vertical shear sides of the rock formations. The spa itself is constructed of thick walls a technique traditionally used in the region to absorb heat in the day and release it during the cool nights. The walls also have varying degrees of perforation in order to cast shadows on the building itself or to allow air to circulate. The arch is employed in abstract and unusual ways in order to bring a sense of familiarity and comfort while using traditional building methods.
