Fractal Façade
The Architecure of Biology

Competition | July 2013

This project proposes to introduce the fractal as a facade system generator to be employed within healthcare facilities. The facade will be constructed of 6 1/2” concrete precast panels embedded with glazing and sunshading devices to only allow the desired amount of light within patient bedrooms. By utilizing this type of tiling fractal all the dimensions needed within a patient bedroom can be satisfied, from the dimensions of a patient bed, headwall and seating spaces to window openings and ceiling mounted fixtures. As a way to maximize production three full size panels can be manufactured and repeated without creating monotony within the whole building elevation. Each 28 wide panel is perfectly proportioned for two patient bedrooms.

View from exterior. Note the seemingly endless variation produced with the use of only 3 different panels.
