A Green Courtyard for the Triple Decker

Competition | Feb 2014

This proposal re-energizes the triple decker typology by introducing agricultural production within the structure. The hydroponic method for growing terrestrials plants is implemented at the center of the triple decker and spans vertically all three levels. The inner surface of this vertical courtyard is constructed of a reflective aluminum to promote the diffusion of light. The space immediately around the plants is surrounded by catwalks constructed of lightweight metal grating so as to allow natural light from the glass covered opening in the roof to reach the complete depth. This light also reaches the 1st floor and serves as a light well for the functions on the ground level. The upper two levels are reserved for private functions (living quarters and hydroponic preparation/work area) whereas the ground level is dedicated to the sale of the home-grown plants (lettuce, tomato, basil, radish, swiss chard, spinach, kale and broccoli) as well as a large space to be used for cooking and kitchen skills classes.
